entrevista de PAGE magazine

La revista alemana PAGE nos hizo la siguiente entrevista para preparar el artículo que aquí mencionaba hace unos días. Respuestas formuladas a dúo con Rivera Valdez y leídas por Jef Safi y Alicia Pallas.


– What is “y sin embargo” (I don’t speak spanish…)? I mean: What issues do you deal with?

Y SIN EMBARGO (aproximately translate ‘And nevertheless’) is a thematic free magazine about culture, society and art, in spanish and english -and occassionally also in french-, with a singular topic going through the whole issue on each issue. We believe content, design and concept are equally important and we try to reflect this aesthetic in every article. We decide a topic and a methodology and we ask for focused-unreleased works to different ‘players’ (artists) from many cities around the world. For us, it’s fundamental to explore some of the many possibilities a topic can bring and a range of the unexpected echoes it can provoke. We’re not really interested in collages, not even in a regular grid or fixed layout. That’s why we try to make a new self-consistent object on each challenge.

For instance, YSE #17, “mess-up mess-age”, was done working around the following idea:

Multiple messages.
How much texts fit in a text ?
How much in a picture, how much in a collage ?
How far does the medium bears the load ?
How much information can be encrypted ?
How much message stands a message ?
How many readings ?
How far the significant density can be forced / demanded / multiplied ?
How much the content layers add ?
Staggered sublevels (hierarchic or NOT-hierarchic) ?
How far the invisible architecture can be extended (how deep) ?

Launched from works exploring / exploiting this possibilities.
Works which explain and give the topic a turnover.
Which risk.
Game, mockery and humor.
Critics, the mass-media mechanisms put into evidence.
Narrations with as many readings as possible.
Mixed-media with as much message it can contain.
How much message can be stored in a can ?

Other topics have been “intervisto”, featuring 15 artists performing the answers of a common interview and another 15 ones re-interpretating their answers; the “du-champ-i-ssue” or the one dedicated to the paradigm of accumulation as a systemic principle of all activities, etc.

YSE is not another submission-driven magazine and certainly it’s not another publicity-uncovered magazine. It’s free, independent and can be downloaded cost-free.

– And how does it work? Eleonora wrote, that you have different groups at flickr, myspace etc. How does the platform work – and how do you destilate the content of the magazine?

The platform and the social network work as rhizomes (Deleuze inspired the thematic of YSE#14), some rhizomes like attractive centers of new players,
places for discussion, diffusion, and exchange of informations, opinions and materials. YSE’s web publishes fresh articles from monday to friday and the groups and profiles on flickr, myspace, facebook, issuu, youtube, hi5 and tumblr make a great melody, noise, background and feedback. With four years and almost 800.000 downloads on YSE’s back that’s quite an incentive to begin new adventures and to be exigent with ourselves.


– How often is it published?

Issues are released quarterly, coinciding exactly with each change of season. On 21st December we’ll publish YSE #18, “inout side”.


– How did you get that idea to publish a magazine via Lulu.com?

The idea came from the intention of giving to our readers the possibility to acquire the magazine on paper support with certain quality standards.
The print-on-demand mechanism looks like the best option for a free magazine with no sponsors at all.


– And what are your experiences? Does it work satisfyingly (the quality, the workflow etc.)?

– Do you sell quite a bit of issues – I mean: Do you really make money by that or is it more a thing you do because your heart is in there?

Second option 100%. Even if we make money with this, still the heart keeps guiding the reason and direction of the Y SIN EMBARGO experience.


– And who makes it? Who are you – are you designers, illustrators, musicians etc.?

The principal, director, chief editor (the chair-man, in short) is Fernando Prats -designer, editor, writer, musician, photographer- and, maybe as a result of, many of the contributors are either multi-talented people, like Rivera Valdez, Jef Safi or Oriol Espinal. When this is not the case, we work with musicians, writers, philosophers, designers, photographers, illustrators, painters, journalists, semiologist and researchers, in a sort of sweet-vertigo interplay.
